Shrubs or small tree with purple-brown bark, glabrous to papillose, up to 2 meters high. Leaves ear-shaped or auriculate, not sheathing, with free distinct blade. Racemes from woody branches, 2-7 cm long, 6-7 mm broad. Bracts shorter to longer than pedicels. Flowers large, pink. Sepals ovate, acute. Petals 3-6 mm long, rather persistent. Stamens 10-13; filaments not arising from disk. Style 3, club-shaped. Fruit pink, pyramidal, 3-valved capsule, 7-12 mm long. Seeds many with terminal tuft of hairs. 

Flowering from April to November.
Saline sandy regions and waste places.
