Perennial, dwarf, silvery-green, rigid, herb, up to 35 cm high. Stems slender, much branched, smooth, nearly or grooved. Leaves stiff, divided into 2-3 spiny-linear segments, up to 6 cm long. Flowers purple in heads on long peduncles, up to 7 cm long, not subtended by spines. Calyx-teeth short-subulate. Fruit 7-9 mm long, woolly, cone-like. 

Flowering from March to July.
