Highly salt tolerant. Forage plant with known several local medicinal uses. Sedges once used to make sails, ropes, baskets and mats.

Variable plant, glabrous, perennial, 30-70 cm high; roots stout, fibrous, woolly. Stem stout, terete, thickened below, trigonous above, leafy at base. Leaves as long as stem or shorter, 2-5 mm wide, terete, grooved, pungent. Bracts leaf-like, 10-30 cm long. Spikelets linear, clustered on rays in an umbellate inflorescence, rather large, 8-16 flowerd; glumes minutely mucronate, generally persistent. Stigmas 3. Achene (nut) obovate, 2-3 mm long, unequally trigonous, angled, but unwinged. 

Flowering from December-June.
Desert plant. Sandy places and sand dunes.
