Annual herb. Stems 5-25 cm, white-woolly, glabrescent, ending in a head and usually branched from lower internodes; branches slender, procumbent or ascending. Leaves greenish, pubescent; basal 20-50 mm long, 5-10 mm wide, oblong to spathulate, dentate, shprtly spiny, petiolate; cauline, 10-30 mm long, 3-6 mm wide, oblong-lanceolate, sessile, dentate-spinulos. Heads ovoid, 1-2 cm long. Florets purple, all tubular. Outer involucral bracts in one row, prickly a little longer than the oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, with a pappus of plumose bristle, 6-8 mm long. 

Flowering from March to May.
