Annual herb, up to 20 cm in hight, more or less stemless, hairy below Leaves nearly basal, dark green, linear-lanceolate, 2-8 cm long, 0.3-1 cm wide, pointed at apex and clasping base or tapering below to an amplexicaul petiole. Peduncles axillary, longer than leaves. Spikes dense and glassy, ovate or cylindrical, 1-3 cm long. Bracts broadly ovate, glabrous with scarious-margin and dark midrib. Flowers minute, brownish. Calyx 4-lobed, leathery, glabrous, scarious margined, keeled. Corolla 4-lobed, glabrous, ovate-oblong, membranous. Fruit a capsule, elliptic, 4-6 mm long. Seeds 2, oblong, boat-shaped, pale-brown, 4-5 cm long. 

Flowering from January to April.
