Annual herb, mostly erect, up to 120 cm high. Stem stout, branched, angular. Leaves alternate, glabrous, or pilose on the lower surface, ovate-lanceolate or ovate-rhomboid, 4-15 cm long and 2-8 cm wide, acute or rather obtuse at the apex, with long petioled, 2-10 cm long. Inflorescence terminal, paniculate, of dense long spikes, the lateral ascending, much branched, panicle up to 30 cm long. Male and female flowers intermixed throughout the spikes. Bracteoles deltoid-ovate, membranous acuminate, with a long reddish-tipped and twice as long as perianth. Flowers 0.2-0.3 cm long, white-green, perianth 5-lobed. Utricle ovoid, dehiscent, 2-3 beaked. 

Flowering from March to November.
