Honey nectar plants. The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. Mandaville reports from an earlier source that it was sometimes added during preparation of iqt (dried milk shards) to increase the acidity. Leaves have a citrus taste and are eaten as a salad green or cooked with meat. Eaten raw as treatment for liver diseases, bad digestion and constipation.

Annual herb, glabrous, 10-30 cm high, branching from the base, rather fleshy. Leaves 2-6 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, elliptic or ovate to deltoid, 3-5 nerved, base cuneate, obtuse, on petioles mostly equaling or exceeding the blade. Racemes simple or panicled. Pedicels solitary. Flowers 2-3 together at top of pedicels. Fruiting perianth growing showy, greenish-yellow when young, becoming bright pink to reddish; valves entire, 1-2 cm longer than pedicels, membranous, subequal, often netted-veined without marginal vein. Flowering from February-April.
