Perennial herb or undershrub up to 80 cm high. Stem much branched and swollen at the nodes, angled or striate, hairy or tomentose. Leaves 2-9 cm long and 1-5 cm wide, opposite, ovate to almost orbicular, hairy or pilose, with short petioled. Spike interrupted, especially in the lower part, 2-6 cm long. Bracts ovate to lanceolate, 0.1-0.3 cm long, persistent. Flowers hermaphrodite, 0.2-0.6 cm long, sessile, grouped in cluster of 3, yellowish-green, perianth segments 0.3-0.5 cm long, oblong, nearly glabrous or pilose, 3-nerved. Hooked spines of modified flowers, mostly glabrous, yellow, 0.3-0.5 cm long. Capsule ovoid, 0.2-0.3 cm long. Seed oblong to ovoid, small, dark brown. 

Flowering from January to May.
A weed in gardens or waste ground, and hill slopes.
