It is used to dye hair, and it is still used for this purpose all over the world today. It is also used for hand decoration and dyeing. The leaves are astringent, stimulant, refrigerated, menstruating, against microbes and infections, abortion occurs. The juice of the leaves is used to increase sperm in men, treat prostate enlargement, as well as for diarrhea, cough, asthma, skin diseases, diseases of the circulatory system, heart and blood pressure. It is used externally for sores, burns and varicose veins, and for the treatment of leprosy. The volatile oil is used externally to cool the body.

Shrub or small tree, up to 4 meters, with round branches, often spinescent, Leaves 1-4 cm long and 0.5-1.5 cm wide, opposite, oblanceolate to obovate, acute, narrowed at the base, with short petioled. Flowers about 1 cm in diameter, many-flowerd in large terminal panicled cymes, sepals 4-lobes, acute, 0.4-0.7 cm long. Stamens 8, in pairs, longer than the petals, inserted at base of calyx-tube, anthers 2-called. Style 1, slender persistent, 0.6-1.2 cm long. Capsule 4-called, 0.5-1.0 cm across, globose, irregularly opening at maturity. Seeds numerous, pyramidal shape, brown.
