A glaucous-green, pale, rigid, sedge, 10-25 cm high. Roots fibrous, with sand-binding hairs. Stems on rigid, often curved. Leaves basal 5-20 cm long, 1-3 mm wide, with crowded sheaths, red-brown, becoming fibrous, persistent and naroow-linear, channeled above, blunt-tipped and rounded below. Heads solitary, terminal, 1-3 cm in diameter, often cluster of 4-20 spikelets. Bracts 2, the lower longer than the heads, the upper shorter. Spikelets ovate to broadly lanceolate, 6-12 mm long, 3-5 mm wide, reddish-brown. Glumes oblong, rounded on the back, strongly nerved, obtuse, apiculate. Stamens 3, anthers exserted from glume. Style 1.5-3 mm long. Stigma 3. Achenes obovoid, flattened, dark-brown, shorter than glume. 

Flowering from September to December.
