A short rhizomed perennial, 20-50 cm high, with coarse, fibrous roots. Stems erect, croweded, ribbed, trigonous at apex, glabrous, leafy at base. Leaves 10-20 cm long, flat, narrowly linear, margins involute, acuminate, scabrous upwards; sheathes brown, 4-5 cm long. Bracts shorter than inflorescence. Umble of 2-10 spikelets, with pedicels unequal, mostly 4-8 mm long or sometime sessile, oblong, ovoid, terete, brown, many-flowerd. Rachilla angular. Glumes ovate, weakly keeled and shortly muvronate above, pubescent on upper half only. Stamens usually 2, rarely 3. Style 2-2.5 mm long, flat, thicked at base, bifid at apex and ciliate at margins. Stigma 2, short. Achene 1-1.5 mm long, obovoid or ovate, biconvex, whitish to yellow. 

Flowering from September to November, but dried inflorescence visible throughout the year.
