Perennial herbs, up to 50 cm high, with rootstock creeping, tuberiferous. Stems robust, trigonous. Leaves several, long, flat, keeled. Umble compound, simple; spikelets brown, many-flowered, subtended by an involucre, longer than rays. Glumes ovate, acutely bifid, with an awn in the sinus, hairy; bristles 6-3, retrorse-scabrous. Style 3-fid, not dilated or constricted above the nut. Nut glossy, triquetrous, smooth, black. 

Flowering from March to July.
