Extremely salt tolerant up to seawater salinity and excretes salt. Grazed by livestock only when other food is not available.

A perennial grass, with long stolons or rhizomes, and with densely tufted culms, sending up vertical or erect flowering culms, up to 20 cm long, from long prostrate, widely spreading stems, latter covered with hairy overlapping scales. Leaf-blade flat, lanceolate, usually not pungent, 2-5 cm long, ligules a rim of hairs. Inflorescence a dense, globular or oblong head, 1-1.5 cm long, of hairy spikes. 

Flowering in variable time.
Sandy soil and salty marshes or moist ground.
