An annual grass, with purple, interrupted nodding panicle. Culms 10-40 cm high, erect or ascending, often branching from the base, smooth, glabrous. Leaf-blades linear, 8-18 cm long, flat or folded, about 3 mm wide. Glumes unequal, lower 5-7 mm long, acute, upper 7-10 mm long. Lemma continuous with awn, branches of the awn 10-25 mm long, the central awn mostly longer than the laterals. 

Flowering from February to April.
