A stoloniferous, perennial grass, rooting at the lower nodes and sending up ascending to erect culms, 20-60 cm high. Leaf-blade 3-12 cm long, 3-9 mm wide, glabrous except near mouths of the sheaths; ligule membranous. Inflorescence of usual 2, (rarely up to 5) spikes, each 2-5 cm long. Spikelets 3-5 mm long; glume and lower lemma, thin, glabrous, 3-nerved, upper lemma smooth. Flowering in Spring.
