Perennial grass, with stout rhizome. Culms erect, tufted, about 1 m in height. Leaves linear-acuminate, flat or rolled, scabrous. Ligules a rim of hairs. Inflorescence dense, cylindrical, terminal, solitary, white or pink to purple, spike like panicle, up to 35 cm long, with hairy axis. Spikelet's solitary or in clusters (1-3 spikelet's), with awns, about 2.5 cm long, each spikelet or spikelet clusters surrounded by an involucre of bristles; the inner bristles plumose in the lower half. Flowering from April to November.
