Highly salt tolerant, Naturalized and cultivated. Good fodder grass. Has high potential as an agricultural crop.
A perennial grass, with tufted culms, erect or geniculately ascending, from a stout, woody rootstock, up to 100 cm high. Leaf-blades linear, acuminate, glabrous or hairy. Raceme or a false spike, pale yellow or purplish, 1-2 cm broad, from a few up to 15 cm long, often flexuose. Spikelets solitary, or in clusters of 2-3, seated on short, stout pedicels and enveloped, by an involucre of 2- kinds of bristles. Bristles awn-like, inner ones connate into a disc and densely plumose-hairy around the spikelet, upwards naked. One awn 14-16 mm long, others 10-12 mm long. Flowering from February to May.
