Perennial or sometimes annual grass, 5-50 cm high, erect or ascending, arising from stout rootstock. Leaf-blades 2-15 cm long, 2-7 mm wide, panicle 2-12 cm long. Burs small, green, 3-4 mm long, with few, erect, flat, acute teeth, connate for at least half their length, these teeth with green center and inflated yellow to purple margin, forming short, rigid, subulate, subequal spines. Spikelets in a cluster, 2-3, mostly about 5 mm long. Flowering in Spring.
Rocky places, gravel, sandy soil and fields.
