The rhizome of kulanjan is carminative, febrifuge, and bronchodilator. It expels the phlegm (mucus), improves voice, and is very useful in sore throat and respiratory congestion. It is also used in rheumatism. The seeds have the same uses as the rhizome.

A perennial plant, up to 5.2 m tall and 1 m long, the roots are thick, with a thick ground stem forming Red rhizomes are very sinuous, aromatic resembling the smell of ginger. Leaves alternate and basal, spline to Ribbon-shaped on thin stems, brittle with fringed edges, 15-25 x 3-6 cm. The inflorescence is unlimited, and the flowers are Tubular in shape, consisting of hanging compound clusters, on a separate leafless stand, red in color with colored edges. Pink or yellow, the fruit is pulp, red-orange, the seeds are ribbed and aromatic. 

Cultivated only on sandy loam soils and in humid tropical climate.
