A tufted, perennial grass, up to 60 cm high. Stem slander, erect or ascending, finely pubescent at nodes. Leaf-blades narrow-linear, 3-12 cm long; ligule scarious, fimbriate. Inflorescence of solitary, erect, spicate racemes, 3-6 cm long, terminal on the upper culm branches; spikelets 3-5 mm long, with a distinct circular pit above middle of the outer glume. Glumes equal, glossy-yellowish. Lemmas hyaline the upper, narrow gradually passing into the geniculate awn; paleas minute or absent. Grain oblong to ellipsoid, dorsally compressed. Flowering from February to April.
