Tufted, dwarf annual or perennial grasses, with culms kneed below, 5-20 cm high, leaf-blades very narrow-linear, 4-10 cm long. Panicle spicate, 2-8 cm long, blackish-grey, glossy. Spikelets 7-8 mm long, finely pubescent, 3-flowered; lower glume 3-7 nerved, 2-5 mm long, the upper 3-5 nerved, 2.5-6.5 mm long, membranous. Lemmas 9-nerved, the nerves produced above as 9 scabrous to plumose awns, often longer than the lemma. Anthers 0.3-0.5 mm long. Grain elliptic, tiny. Flowering from February to April.
