Annual or perennial herbs, with opposite, entire, exstipulate leaves and with flowers in racemose or cymose inflorescences often dichotomously branched, bisexual or unisexual. Calyx tubular, with 5-teeth at apex, with 10 or 20 longitudinal nerves. Petals 5, with a distinct limb and claw, coronal scales usually present. Stamens 10, unequal, of which are adnate to the petals. Ovary 3-5 called at base, 1-called above; styles 3. Fruit a capsule, with a carpophore (short stalk), or sessile, dehiscing by twice as many as valves or teeth as styles. Seeds numerous, reniform or ear-shaped, tubercled, embryo annular.
