Honey nectar plants. good forage but too hot for pregnant cattle. Extract of leaves and stem used as ear drops to relieve earache. Powdered seeds, mixed with milk applied to remove warts.
Stout, erect, perennial herb, up to 130 cm high. Stems branching from woody base. Basal leaves 3-8 cm long and 2-5 cm broad, with short petiolate, broadly elliptic or obovate to oblong-lanceolate, leathery with thick midrib; upper leaves alternate, small, few to leafless. Inflorescences in terminal and axillary racemes. Flowers 1-1.5 cm across, purple-blue or pinkish, rarely white; pedicle 3-4 mm long. Sepals 6-8 mm long and 1-2 mm broad. Petals 10-15 mm long and 4-5 mm broad, clawed. Stamens 6. Ovules 2, one in each locule of the ovary. Silicle 10-15 mm long; upper part 10-12 mm long, subglobose with a beak, and the basal part of the fruit short and subtriangular, 1-2 seeded. Seeds oblong-ellipsoid about 2 mm long, brown. Flowering from February- June.
