Annual or short-lived perennial, stems branched from base, erect, up to 80 cm, covered with bristly hairs. Leaves opposite, 0.5-3 * 1-4.5 cm, oblong, on stalk up to 1.5 cm. Inflorescence much-branched, terminal and in leaf nodes. Flowers on fine stalks up to 1 cm, blue to greyish, 0.3-0.7 cm across, with protruding stamens. Fruit 4 nutlets, 0.5 cm, winged, egg-shaped. Flowering from January to May.
