Cushion-forming, spinescent, intricately and divaricately branched shrublet to c. 30 cm high. Leaves only in the basal portion of young branches, (1.5–)2–7.5 x 0.5–2 cm, oblanceolate, denticulate with white rigid teeth, sinuate-dentate to pinnatifid, somewhat leathery. Synflorescences of divaricately branched, zig-zag-forming lignified axes; peduncles 0.6–2 cm long, subulate, remaining as spines after shedding the capitula Capitula with 8–12 florets; involucre 8–12 mm long, inner phyllaries 5. Florets bright yellow, ligule 7–8 mm long, anthers (appendages excluded) 2.5–3.2 mm long. Achenes 3–4 mm long, pale to greyish black; the inner ones apically attenuate, with 4 main ribs, smooth to wrinkled; the marginal ones with 5 main ribs, ± cuspidate, with pointed transversal wrinkles; pappus 6–7 mm long, persistent, of outer downy hairs and inner bristles.
