Dwarf perennial, glabrous, with thick woody rootstock, diving at the top into several prostrated, twisted branches, and very close to the ground. Leaves 0.5-1.5 cm long, about 0.5 cm wide, oblong to ovate-elliptic 3-nerved, crenate to serrate margins with long petioles, hairy; stipules linear, opposite the leaves, yellow. Sepals 4-5, ovate or oblong, 3-4 mm long. Petals 4-5, obovate often equal to sepals. Stamens 8-10. Carpels 4, ovary oblong-cylindrical, 4-loculed; style about 1 mm long; stigma 4-lobed. Capsule 0.8-2 cm long, pod-like, cylindrical, straight or curved, opening by 4-valves, beak entire. Seeds many, blackish-grey. Flowering from February to May.
Loam compact soils (in the form of mats close to the ground surface) or in cultivated areas.
