Perennial, woody base, forming tussocks. Stems erect up to 75-100 cm, with hairy nodes. Leaves 0.2-0.7* 3-30 cm, flat or rolled, ending in pointed tip. Inflorescence tuft of 2-15 slender finger-like purplish spikes. Spikelets 2-flowered, crowded in pairs, one with stalk and one without. Stalkless floret has long (up to 2.5 cm) bristle-like appendage (awn).
