  • REMARKS: very common in the UAE. Toxicity: highly poisonous. known formerly as Vinca rosea, is a main source of vinca alkaloids, now sometimes called catharanthus alkaloids (van Der Heijden, R. et al., 2004). The plant produces about 130 of these compounds, including vinblastine and vincristine, two drugs used to treat cancer (Cooper, Deakin, 2016).

Moderately salt and drought tolerant, widely used as an ornamental plant for edging, groundcover and as a hanging plant.
known formerly as Vinca rosea. Shrubby perennial, up to 60cm high, with slender, erect, fleshy stems arising from woody base. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, entire, leathery, glossy, 3-5cm long, 1-2cm broad. Flowers clustered in upper leaf axils, somewhat oleander like, with short tube opening to 5-flat, radiating petals. Flowers 1-2cm across, mostly white to rose, shading to a dark red in the center. Flowering in spring.
Cultivated, grows in full sun and tolerates salinity.
