Moderate in salinity and drought tolerance.
Shrublet, 10-40 cm high, strigose, with appressed, unequal prickles, canescent. Stems erect to ascending, branched, whitish and often pinkish below. Leaves 10-25 mm long, 4-5 mm wide, oblong-lanceolate, sessile, ciliate at margins, with stiff bristles. Flowers bisexual, subsessile. Calyx deeply 5-lobed, 3-5 mm long, hispid. Corolla blue to violet, 5-lobed, 1-15 mm long, 3-4 times longer than calyx. Stamens 5, epipetalous, with unequal filaments, nearly exerted. Style filiform, 10-15 mm long; stigma capitate, 2-lobed. Fruit 4, nutlets each 1-2 mm long, ovate-triangular, brownish, glossy, tubercled, included in the persistent calyx. Flowering from February to May.
Sandy soil and tolerates saline conditions of the coastal lowlands.
