  • REMARKS: Wadi Wurayah National Park (WWNP). Toxicity: poisonous. Phillips notes that the leaves were used in the past to treat coughs and bladder complaints. Rizk & El-Ghazaly list a number of medicinal uses and state that the plant is poisonous to cattle and horses. (Norton et al., 2009). Mandaville quotes earlier authors who reported that the leaves are eaten as a vegetable by Persians in Kuwait (Norton et al., 2009). Malva spp. are food plants for the painted Lady butterfly Vanessa cardui.

Moderately salt tolerant. Infusion of seeds and leaves applied to soothe skin and treat fevers and headaches or used as gargle.
Annual, prostrate-procumbent herb, 10-40 cm long, with stellate hairs or glabrescent. Leaves as in the preceding, but obtusely-lobed. Flowers 2-4 or more in axillary clusters. Epicalyx 3, linear bracteoles, calyx 4-6 mm long, free nearly to middle, growing up to about 1 cm in fruit. Petals 5-7 mm long, hardly exceeding calyx, white, pinkish at the tip, claws of petals glabrous. Fruit discoid, 5-7 mm in diameter. Seeds brown, black, glabrous. Flowering from February to May.
