Moderately salt tolerant, ornamental plant. Edible berry.
Dense evergreen, aromatic shrub, 1.5-3 meters high. Twins many, tetragonal. Leaves opposite, coriaceous, short-petioled, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, pellucid-dotted 1-3cm long. Flowers white, regular, hermaphrodite. Peduncles solitary, axillary, shorter than leaves. Calyx tube globular, limb 5-parted. Petals 5, spreading. Stamens numerous in several rows. Berry blackish-blue, edible, about 1cm in diameter. Flowering in the spring.
Cultivated with several cultivars. Grows in gardens, parks and roadsides. Needs full sun and tolerates salinity and dry conditions.
