  • REMARKS: Plants used by honeybees for nectar collection for honey production. Toxicity: poisonous. Triterpenoid lantodene whole plant, fruit. Lantana camara is known to be toxic to livestock such as cattle, sheep, horses, dogs and goats [Ross, 1999]. The active substances causing toxicity in grazing animals are pentacyclic triterpenoids, which result in liver damage and photosensitivy [Barceloux, 2008]. L. camara also excretes allelopathic chemicals, which reduce the growth of surrounding plants by inhibiting germination and root elongation (Ahmed, 2007).

An evergreen shrub, 1-3 meters high, with numerous branches, mostly with rough, prickly feeling leaves. Leaves opposite, ovate 3-6cm long, short petioled, crenate-dentate, thickish, wrinkled-scabrous above, hairy beneath. Flowers in dense heads, flat-topped on rigid axillary peduncles. Calyx minute, truncate. Corolla limb colour ranges from yellow to pink, spreading, oblique, nearly 2-lipped, with 4-5 broad obtuse lobes. Fruit small, drupe-like, with 2-nutlets, purple-blackberry. Flowering from January-December.
Cultivated as an excellent border plant or as decorative plant in full sun or shade. Tolerates salinity and dry conditions.
