Coriaceous, pale-green, glabrous, annual herb up to 25 cm high. Stem stiff, streaky, more or less zigzag shape, mostly branched from base. Leaves alternate, 1-4 cm long and 0.2-0.4 cm wide, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, or spinose apex and with 5-10 parallel veins. Flowers sessile, 0.2-0.4 cm long, in the axils of densely clustered cymes. Bracts ovate, with spinose apex, 0.2-0.6 cm long. perianth segments white, scarious, included in the bracts. Stamens 3-4; filaments, slender, connate at the base. Ovary ovoid, 0.2-0.4 cm long, with persistent stigmas forming 2-lobed beak. Achene compressed, with 2-triangular spreading wings at apex, mostly exerted from the bract. Seed small, oblong ovate, brown, about 0.1 cm long. Flowering from November to February.
