Annual herb, 30-90 cm high. Stem erect or suberect, hairy, much branched from the base upwards. Leaves 2-5 cm long, 0.5-2 cm broad, lanceolate-oblong with 3-5 nerved at the truncate base, crenate-serrate, without tails or horns near base of blade, apex obtuse, more or less hairy, petioles 5-12 mm long, pilose, stipules setose, 4-8 mm long. Cymes solitary, 1-3 flowers, on short peduncles. Sepals 5-7 mm long, boat shape or oblong-obovate. Petals yellow, spathulate, 5-6 mm long. Stamens 15-25. Ovary hairy, cylindrical style short; stigma with divergent lobes. Capsule cylindrical 3-5 cm long, 3-valved, pubescent especially along the 6-10 ribs with thick beak. Seeds many, tetragonus, brown to blackish. Flowering from May to October.
