Monoecious, perennial herb, climbing or trailing with tendrils and thick stems, sometimes over 1 meter long. Stems scabrid, grooved, bent at the nodes. Leaves cordate-ovate in shape 3-4 cm long, 2-3 wide, with 3-5 lobed, finally scabrid-hairy. Pedicels 2-4 cm long. Flowers yellow or green; staminate ones, small 3 mm across, in apical racemes; pistillate ones larger in clusters on leafless contracted branches; stigma 1. Fruit red, chilli-like, apiculate, about 2 cm long, more or less glabrous, with few seeded. Flowering from September to November.
