Perennial herb, scabrous, grey, prostrate, up to 2 meter long. Stems trailing, branched, angled-grooved, with vertical thick root. Tendrils filiform. Leaves 1.5-5 cm long and broad, rigid, scabrous, orbicular to cordate in shape, palmately 3-5 lobed. Male flowers solitary or in clusters. Female flowers mostly solitary, yellow. Fruit 3-4 cm long, ellipsoid, bristly, tubercled or nearly smooth, marked with 10 longitudinal green or white strips, turning yellow when ripe; pulp bitter. Flowering from March-December.
