Honey nectar plants.
Annual or biennial herb, 10-30 cm high, more or less pubescent, branching from the base, the branches dichotomous, narrowly winged, with decurrent leaves. Radical leaves 5-10 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, oblong-linear, pinnatifid, with narrow oblong segments, dentate, tapering at base to a petiole; cauline leaves gradually smaller and less dissected, decurrent. Head 0.7-1.5 cm across in forks or terminal, short-peduncled, solitary, ovoid, subtended by upper leaves. Spines of involucre, yellow, 1-2 cm long, with 2-3 rather remote prickles on each side. Florets yellow, shorter than the longest spines of the head. Achenes smooth, brown, truncate at apex, 2-3 mm long. Pappus in several rows, white to brownish, with fine bristles nearly equaling the achenes. Flowering from March to May.
Sandy soil or among rocky places, wadis or desert basins.
