Annual or short-lived perennial herb, grey-green, 40-150 cm high, woolly, much-branched from the base, with long, slender stems. Basal leaves large, ovate or oblong-lanceolate, 4-8 cm long, 2-4 cm broad, with clear midrib, upper ones smaller or reduced. Flowers many, in terminal racemes. Calyx 5-lobed, equal, 5-9 mm long. Corolla 5-lobed, rotate, yellow-orange, about 1.5 cm across. Stamens 5, red, filaments villous, anthers transverse or oblique, cells confluent. Stigma simple. Capsule ovoid, septicidal, about 5 mm across. Seeds wrinkled. Flowering from March to June.
