Extract from whole plant used to treat conjunctivitis. Used for red dye, also as cosmetic.
Erect, annual herb, up to 1 meter widely cultivated, chiefly for its oil, or safflower carmine. Stems white, much branched. Leaves alternate, sessile, oblong-lanceolate, entire and unarmed or spinulose-serrate, 2-8 cm long, 1-3 cm broad, subglabrous. Heads solitary, ovoid to conical-ovoid, 2-4 cm across. Involucral bracts oblong-lanceolate, entire, leaf-like, florets reddish or yellow. Acehnese obpyramidal, smooth, shiny, white, 6-10 mm long, pappus absent. Flowering from March to June.
Cultivated and escaped in fallow fields.
