Annual, 30-100 cm high. Stems erect or ascending, gray appressed-pubescent. Leaves numerous, entire, the upper linear, sessile, acute, the basal leaves oblong-lanceolate, with acute lobes and tapering to a petiole. Inflorescence sometimes with elongated branches overtopping the main axis, heads in a rich panicle. Involucre 4-6 mm long, hirsute, rarely glabrous, linear-lanceolate, acute. Female florets in several rows, pale, yellow or whitish-purple. Achenes 1-2 mm long, with pappus exceeding the achenes. Flowering from February to May.
