Fresh leaves rubbed on scorpions stings to relieve pain. Tea of plant treats fevers. Extract of leaves a treatment for piles. Roots and seeds eaten as a worm treatment. Paste from seeds used as a treatment for skin disorders.
Annual, green herb, up to 90 cm high. Stem erect, terete, ribbed, glandular, more or less pubescent, branched near the apex. Lower leaves 2-6 cm long and 1-3 cm broad, petiolate; upper leaves smaller ovate, obtuse or acute, serrate, subsessile. Heads in terminal compound corymbs. Involucre campanulate, 4-rows, shorter than heads. Involucral bracts lanceolate, very pointed at the top, pilose. Corolla 4-5 mm long, tubular, 5-lobed, reddish-purple. Achenes about 2 mm long, narrowly cylindrical, attenuate at base faintly ribbed, adpressed white-pubescent. Pappus biseriate white, setaceous. Flowering from February to May-October.
Weed in abandoned fields or road sides.
