Rhizomatous. Stems cylindrical, branched 50-100 cm long. Leaves mostly submerged, yellowish-green, subsessile to petiolate; lamina 3-nerved, oblong-lanceolate, 5-20 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, acute to cuspidate at apex, cuneate at base, margin entire to serrulate. Stipules up to 7 cm long, herbaceous. Peduncles 5-20 cm long. Spikes thickened, many flowered. Fruitlets 2-3 mm obovoid. Flowering from April to May.
