Perennial grass, densely tufted at base, with erect branched. Culms up to 60 cm high. Leaf-blades 10-30 cm long, linear, rolled or folded often glaucous, glabrous except at or above the ligule; ligule membranous, nearly laciniate. Panicle loose, 10-20 cm long. Spikelets about 1 m broad, varying from scantily hairy to densely villouse, rarely glabrous. Awn kneed, up to 3 cm long. Flowering in Spring.
Sandy stony grounds or rocky places.
