A loosely tufted, eglandular, capillary, annual grass. Culms many, slender glabrous up to 35 cm high, with narrow leaves, 4-10 cm long, glabrous, acuminate, sheaths 2-3 cm long, ciliate near the mouth. Ligule a ciliate rim. Panicle 6-12 cm long, very loose, delicate, open, often of minute, long-pedicelled spikelets. Spikelets 3-9 flowered, 1-4 mm long. Glumes unequal, obtuse. Lemmas obtuse, very small, paleas persistent, with a fringe of stiff, spreading hairs along the keeled margins. Grains about 0.5 mm long, ovoid. Flowering in Spring.
