Coarse, stoloniferous grass. Culms erect, up to 80 cm high, hard, smooth, woody at base. Leaves 12-35 cm long, flat, convolute, very narrow, wiry, acuminate, glabrous; sheath terete, appressed, striate, mouth villous. Ligule a few hairs. Panicle up to 30 cm long, the branches short, with a few or 1-2 spikelets. Spikelets pedicelled, 8-25 flowered. Glumes unequal, 6-9 mm long, acute, the lower 3-5-nerved, the upper 5-7 nerved. Lemmas 7-9 mm long, lanceolate, hairy, long, thin, white hairs from the callus and rhacilla tip visible over the lemma bases. Flowering in Spring.
