An annual grass, with solitary or fascicled, branched below, smooth and glabrous, culms 30-60 cm high, erect or decumbent, with 3-4 nodes. Ligules truncate, 1.5-2 mm long. Auricles present or absent. Leaf-blades 5-20 cm long, 2-7 mm broad, flat, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, dark-green. Spike straight, 5-35 cm long. Spikelets 1-2 cm long. Upper glume more than half as long as the spikelets. Lemmas 7-9 mm long, weakly bifid at apex awned from near the tip; awn straight 8-12 mm long. Flowering from February to April.
