Honey nectar plants.

Erect, much branched near the middle, purplish, 50-100 cm high, ridged, spiny herb, with multicellular glandular setae and a lanate indumentum. Leaves ovate-lanceolate in outline, usually 2-pinnatisect, 8-25 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, with simple, glandular-hairy above, white-tomentose or white arachnoid below; midrib raised below; lobes triangular, spinescent, spines pale yellow, 2-3 cm long. Capitula in compound heads forming spherical ball, 3-6 cm in diameter (excluding the spines), blue or white. Flowering from March to July. 

Fallow places, silt among rocks and hillsides.
