Extremely salt tolerant up to seawater level. Young shoots eaten as salad green. Stems and leaves boiled in water, used as a rinse for tooth and gum problems.
Annual herb, glabrous, or mealy up to 40 cm high. Stems procumbent to erect, branching, densely leafy-leaves 1-2 cm long and 0.2 cm broad, fleshy terete or semiterete, obtuse, incurved, spreading the floral much longer than flowers. Flowers sessile or sub-sessile, bisexual clustered, arranged in long leafy spikes. Perianth lobes about 3 mm long becoming spongy-baccate, gibbous-inflated in fruit. Seeds vertical, small. black, smooth. Flowering from October to December.
