A perennial grass, with stout, scaly, broadly spreading rhizome. Culms erect, 30-150 cm high, silky-pubescent at the nodes. Leaf-blades flat, linear-acuminate, up to 60 cm long, 2-3 cm broad. Panicle with widely spreading branches, 7-25 cm long. Sessile spikelets ovate, creamy-buff, sometimes with a purplish tinge, 3.5-6 mm long, nearly pubescent, awnless or usually with a geniculate awn, 6-17 mm long. Pedicellate spikelets usually violet-purple, 4-7 mm long, awnless. Grain obovoid, glossy. The varieties of this species differed according to the presence or absence of the awns in spikelets. Flowering from April to September.
As a weed in moist waste places or cultivated as forage.
