Annual geass, with solitary or tufted culms, up to 80 cm high, hollow, sometimes hairy at the nodes. Leaf-blades 1-2 cm broad, flat, linear-lanceolate, acuminate. Spikes dense, 2-16 cm long. Spikelets 3-6-9 flowered. Glumes 6-10 mm long (except awns), coriaceous, glabrous or pubescent, yellow to black-purple, terminating in 2-3 mm long, of acute tooth or 4-10 mm long scabrid awn. Fertile lemma 1-1.5 cm long, unawned or with 3-12 cm long scabrid awn. Grains ellipsoid, brown.
Cultivated, or along roadsides or in the desert near Oasis.
